Using Fishing Pole Reels

Posted by Donnie On 9:15 PM No comments
A fishing reel is the component of the fishing rod that holds the line, allows you to cast and reel in the fish. The two most common fishing reels are known as open-faced and closed-face, and both operate differently. Open-faced reels feature no enclosure, and expose the fishing line and spindle. A closed-face reel hides the line in a closed spool, which is supposed to keep the line from becoming tangled if unraveling or snagging occurs. In order to fish successfully, you'll need to know how to properly use a fishing reel.

Instructions

Open-Face Reel

1 Tie the line onto the reel spool rod. This is a thin rod located at the center of the reel with a small hole. Thread the line through the hole and tie it into a knot, then wrap the line around the reel until all the line is on the reel. Thread the end up through the spindle, wrap it over the right end of the loop, and then up onto the rod through the guide holes.
2 How to Use Fishing Pole ReelsHold the fishing line against the pole with your finger, then flip open the loop. The loop is the apparatus that allows you to cast, and is mounted on a hinge, just above the spindle. When you open the loop, the line will let loose.
3 Set the drag to the cast setting, by turning counterclockwise. The drag is a small knob located near the handle , normally at the bottom of the reel.
4 Hold the pole back, in a casting motion, then release your finger from the line when you throw the pole forward into a casting motion.
5 Flip the loop back down, and reset the drag to the reel setting by turning clockwise. When you feel a bite, slightly jerk the pole upward to set the hook, then use the reel handle to reel in the line, turning counterclockwise.

Closed-Face Reels

6 Open the reel face cap. A locking button may need to be pressed depending on your model of reel, or simply twist off the top to open it. Tie the line onto the reel spool rod. This is a thin rod located at the center of the reel with a small hole. Thread the line through the hole and tie it into a knot, then wrap the line around the reel until all of the line is on the reel. Thread the line through the top of the reel face cap, and up through the line guide holes on the rod.
7 Reel your line all the way in, until your lure, leader or bait rests at the top of the pole.
8 Depress the button on the reel to hold the line, then bring your pole back in a casting motion while still holding the button down.
9 Throw forward, and simultaneously release the button to cast the line out.
10 Reel the line in slowly by rotating the handle counterclockwise. When you feel a bite, jerk the line slightly to set the hook, then continue reeling in the line.
