- 1 Buy the right type of carp fishing rods. The three basic types of carp fishing rods are the all-through-action, medium tip action and fast taper tip action. 7 Consider using a fishing bell for carp fishing. A fishing bell is placed on the end of your carp fishing rod, so you can manage more than one fishing pole at the same time. When the bell rings, remove the bell and set the hook. Fishing bells work good if you're carp fishing from shore in a lake without any current. Using a bell for carp fishing in a moving river or from a boat, does not work well.
