How to Tie a Surf Fishing Rig

Posted by Donnie On 1:52 PM No comments

Surf fishing is an economical way to enjoy saltwater angling. The techniques and conditions of surf fishing require a rig and tackle that can hold the bottom in turbulent waves, often with two baited hooks to improve the angler's chances of catching a fish. Surf-fishing rigs can be bought with multicolored beads and spinners, and constructed with materials ranging from monofilament line to threaded wire, but the design and tying them to the end of a line are virtually the same.

Instructions

    1

Tie a saltwater snap swivel to the end of the main line using a clinch knot. Instructions for tying a clinch knot are linked in the reference section.

    2

Insert the loop of line at the end of a snelled hook through the upper wire loop on the wire surf-fishing rig, then put the hook through the loop on the end of the line and pull tight to secure it to the wire rig. Add a second hook to the lower wire loop following the same steps.

    3

Attach a pyramid sinker to the bottom snap clip on the wire surf-fishing rig when angling for bottom-feeders, such as flounder. A pyramid sinker, with its pointed tip, holds the sandy bottom better in rough surf than an egg-shaped sinker. The sinker can also be attached to the main line at the snap swivel, which will hold the bait in place while allowing it to flutter in the waves at a height where cruising fish can attack morsels rising off the bottom.

    4

Clip the top of the surf fishing rig to the snap swivel attached to the main line.

    5

Bait the hooks on the rig with a suitable surf-fishing bait. Squid strips are durable, although chunks of bloodworm release oils and blood to attract fish. Chunks of shrimp and mullet can also be used, with the hook barb buried inside the bait.
