Fremont Ohio, only a short drive from Lake Erie, Little Portage River and Muddy Creek Bay, is home to tremendous fishing opportunities. Situated on the Sandusky River, the town and its surrounding area offers fishing for walleye, bass, trout, catfish, and a variety of panfish. And with so many fishing options, it is a safe bet that something is biting virtually year-round.
Walleye
Walleye can be caught in the Sandusky and Maummee rivers year-round, but their numbers greatly increase during the spring spawn when fish arrive in these tributaries from Lake Erie. The spawn begins in mid March and can last until late April, with the peak period being the last week of March and first two weeks of April. Fish range from 19 to 28 inches. The top lures for walleye here are floating jigs with brightly colored twister tails.
White Bass
Just as the walleye spawn is settling down, white bass begin their run in the same rivers. Beginning in late April, the White bass run peaks in mid May, when catches of 100 fish per day are not unheard of. Live minnows are common bait, and roadrunner-style jigs in white and chartreuse are also top producers for white bass. The bass mostly run 8 to 12 inches.
Smallmouth Bass
Smallmouth bass begin their annual spawn in June, when they move into reef areas of Lake Erie. Bass can also be found on the Sandusky River from the backwaters at Fort Seneca to the area behind the Ballville Dam. A hot spot for smallmouths on the Sandusky is in ripple pools beneath Tundall Bridge. These fish can be caught on crankbaits, minnow plugs, and a variety of soft plastics in addition to live worms, minnows, and crayfish. (Bass fishing is catch and release only from May 1 through the last Friday in June.)
Panfish
Perch can be caught in lake Erie year-round, but in September and October good sized perch can be caught from piers at Port Clinton, Camp Perry, and Sandusky Bay. Live minnows and worms seem to be the best bait options.
Bullhead and Catfish
Bullhead fishing shines in the month of May in Muddy Creek, north of Fremont, and in the backwaters of Little Portage River, where nightcrawlers and leeches fished near the bottom can produce fish up to 15 inches. Much larger channel catfish are available in the Sandusky River, where July and August are the top months to fish. Big cats can be found around the river islands along route 53.
Trout
Minnow Creek, Muskellunge Creek, and Bark creek all offer fishing for rainbow trout in the spring, with a chance at catching bass and panfish. Additionally, the Ohio Division of Wildlife stocks White Star Quarry with rainbow trout every Easter weekend, but these fish can dwindle quickly due to fishing pressure. Fly fishing is a viable option in the streams, and spin fishermen try live worms, in-line spinners, or a variety of soft plastic baits.
