How to Make a Fishing Leader

Posted by Donnie On 7:17 PM 2 comments
How to Make a Fishing Leader
A Fishing Leader is a stronger section of monofilament or wire that protects the fishing line from damage. Sometimes a leader may also be used to reduce the visibility of the fishing line. Leaders can range from 3 inches to 10 or more feet in length, depending on the species targeted and the fishing conditions. Monofilament leaders are normally used, except for toothy fish where a wire leader may be called for. All fishermen should know how to rig leaders.

Tips How to Make a Fishing Leader

  1. Decide if you need a wire or monofilament leader. Use the side cutters to cut the leader to the required length. Make sure that you add 8-10 inches to each end for tying the knots.
How to Tie the Fly-Fishing Line to the Leader

Now that you have the fly line connected to your reel's backing, it's time to connect that line to your fly-fishing leader. If your leader doesn't have a loop in it already, you'll have to make one before using the "loop-to-loop" connection to join the two parts.

Steps Tie the Fly-Fishing Line to the Leader

  1. Make a surgeon's loop in the end of your leader. To do this, form a loop in the end of the leader, which will double the line. Take that doubled line and make a simple overhand knot, wrapping the end around and back through itself (but keep from pulling it tight).
  2. Bring the loop end through the knot one more time and then tighten. Pull on the loop end with one hand and the standing end (the rest of the line, not used to tie a knot) with the other. Trim the loose end.
  3. Use the loop-to-loop connection now that you have loops at the ends of the leader and the fly line. To do this, first put the fly line loop through the larger end of the leader loop.
  4. Take the small end of the leader section and pass it through the fly line loop.
  5. Tighten the connection by pulling the fly line and the leader in opposite directions with a constant and steady motion. The connection should resemble a square knot when you're done.
  6. Clip the ends of your knot, leaving about 1/8 inch so that it won't slip. Trim close to the knot, but allow a little room for it to move when tightened.

How to Identify Antique Fishing Lures

How to Identify Antique Fishing Lures

Fishing is a popular recreational hobby. Some people fish for sport, others fish for food. Antique fishing lures are still used for fishing, but most are collected. Highly collectible antique fishing lures are worth up to a few hundred dollars apiece, pre-1900 lures being the most valuable. Fishing lure companies from this time period are Henry Loftie, John Mann, Riley Haskell Minnow and WD Chapman. The post-1900 companies are James Heddon, William Shakespeare Jr., Creek Chub, South Bend, Pflueger and Moonlight and Paw Paw.

Instructions to Identify Antique Fishing Lures

  1. Look over the antique fishing lure. On the pre-1900 lures, many are made from old wood, un-glossed and not painted in bright colors. There may be an aluminum-only finish. Check for the characteristic acorn body, meaning the shape of the lure is similar to an acorn, especially toward the head of the lure.
  2. Check the finish on a post-1900 fishing lure. Many made after 1900 will be carved and painted to look like tiny bait fish; a popular color being strawberry with a black spotted finish. Other colors that were used include lime green, yellow, and red. These colors may be solid and have an airbrush appearance, and they also may be a solid color with a spotted finish similar to the highly collectible strawberry spot finish types.
  3. Go to antique stores and inquire about vintage copies of old fishing magazines. Often old fishing magazines will have ads for fishing lures from that time period in which the magazine was printed.
  4. Look at the pictures of old lures in the magazine. Look at online auctions under antique fishing lures. Research antique fishing lures in value guidebooks such as "Old Fishing Lures & Tackle: Identification & Value Guide" by Carl F. Luckey and Tim Watts.
How to Rig a Small Aluminum Boat for Fishing

In the spring, summer and fall, you will see aluminum boats carrying fishermen to their favorite fishing spots on most lakes and rivers. Most of these boats are purchased with oars, a small outboard motor for propulsion and a trailer. In order to be ready to go fishing, however, some things need to be added to the boats. The effort to add equipment to a boat to make it perfect for fishing is called rigging. Most fishermen can have their boat ready to fish with equipment easily purchased at marinas or sports supply stores.

Instructions To Rig a Small Aluminum Boat for Fishing

  1. Pull the boat out of the water and let the boat sit on the trailer on level ground. Attach one portable seat on the bench nearest the engine and another portable seat nearest the front of the boat.
  2. Tie one end of the anchor rope to the anchor and the other end of the anchor rope to a cleat on the front of the boat. Coil the anchor rope and set it and the anchor in the very front of the boat. This makes the anchor ready for use when needed.
  3. Mount the trolling motor at the rear of the boat. Put the battery near the center of the boat and lead the wires from the trolling motor to the battery. Attach the positive wire to the positive battery post and the negative wire to the negative battery post.
  4. Use the cordless drill and a 1/8-inch drill bit to drill a hole on the gunwale of the boat midway between the two seats on each side. Mount rod holders on each side of the boat in the drilled holes using the supplied hardware.
  5. Position the transducer for the fish finder on the transom of the boat in a place that will be underwater after the boat is launched. Use a marking pen to mark holes for the screws that mount the transducer. Drill 1/8-inch holes with the cordless drill and drill bit. Put marine caulking on each hole. Use the screws provided with the transducer to screw it tight to the transom. Allow the marine caulking to dry overnight.
  6. Choose a position in the boat easily visible to fishermen. Mount the fish finder in this position using a cordless drill, drill bit and provided hardware. Route the transducer wire from the transducer to the fish finder and plug this wire into the back of the fish finder. Route the power cord from the fish finder to the battery and connect the positive and negative wires to the positive and negative battery posts.
  7. Launch the boat. Check for leaks at the transducer. If there are any leaks, loosen the screws and add additional marine caulking.

How to Set Up a Fishing Planer Board

Posted by Donnie On 6:57 PM No comments
How to Set Up a Fishing Planer Board

Fishing with planer boards allows fishermen to troll baits out to the sides of the boat. Fishing Planer Boards allow the fisherman to cover more area and avoid excessive line tangling. Fishing Planer boards also allow baits to be presented in shallow water while the boat runs in deeper water. A standard planer board is easy to use and moderately expensive for the typical fisherman.

Instructions to Set Up a Fishing Planer Board

  1. Start at the rear of the boat. Bring boat to trolling speed. Position all rods to be used in rod holders on the rear of the boat, or stern.
  2. Select a rod to use with a planer board. Release the line on the selected rod to let lure out to the desired depth.
  3. Hold the fishing line at desired depth and clip the swivel clip (at the back of the planer) around the line. Attach the line release clamp to the line ahead of the swivel clip.
  4. Remove the rod from its holder and place the planer board in the water. Keep the rod tip high and release line until the board reaches desired distance from the boat.
  5. Place the rod back in the rod holder. Adjust the drag setting to prevent the resistance of the lure from pulling line off the reel.
